She Swings, Mesmerized by the Sight

In 1912, the grand opening of the Key’s railroad commenced. It was the 8th wonder of the world. This painting was set that day. Aboard a fishing vessel, the captain's daughter witnessed history change before her eyes.

The public in Marathon, FL, aka Key Vaca at the time, had never seen a train before. It was all horses and coaches, the occasional buggy. So in the early 1900s, when word got out that a railroad was being built, a REAL railroad, you can imagine the buzz. But this wasn't just any railroad. It was an overseas railroad. Meaning this railroad would go over water to connect all the keys by train. 'Exciting' was an understatement.

In my painting, I bring to life the captain's daughter! A wild free-spirit, who forsakes her studious day inside to catch a glimpse of the first train embarking on the overseas railroad. In the video above, I tell of her adventurous day with nuggets of the Key's history. Simultaneously, I bring this painting to LIFE. I show you the process of making this piece from it's construction to the last detail.
